COASTING ON DOWNGRADE While not a typical ticket issued in the Fort-Worth, Dallas area, coasting, operating a vehicle which is not in gear, is illegal in Texas. The legal definition of costing in Texas is: (a) An operator moving on a downgrade may not coast with the gears or transmission of the vehicle in neutral. (b) An operator of a truck, tractor, or bus moving on a downgrade may not coast with the clutch disengaged. Section 545.406 of the Texas Transportation Code Coasting is a moving violation in Texas, which will result in two points on your driving record for a conviction under the Texas point system.
